Pacific Alaska Shellfish, Inc. is located in Nikiski, Alaska on the Kenai Peninsula just sixty miles south of Anchorage. We have been in operation since March 1979 and process Alaskan razor clams and on a seasonal basis -- May through August. These clams are harvested by a crew of 26-29 that live and work on our remote six miles of leased beach between Polly Creek and the Crescent River on the West Side of Cook Inlet.
These clams are then flown across the inlet to our processing facility in Nikiski. Our small, 206 airplane hauls 30, 5 gallon buckets of clams at a time. Each "load" is then weighed and placed in our cooler. The processing plant brings these clam pails in and first shucks, cleans and bags them in a one pound vacuumed pack bags. The finished product, 'steaks' are weighed, then boxed for quick airshipping to market..
A portion of the clam steaks are blast frozen for the "off season" markets. A portion of the fresh clams are frozen whole for bait stock, a favorite of the Dungeness Crab fleet an the most effective bait for crab harvest. Frozen clams are loaded into large shipping containers and shipped to Pacific Seafood cold storage facilities for distribution to market.
Razor Clams are a Northwest delicacy and are arguably the best tasting clam available in the world. Whether prepared in the traditional style of a light breading and fried, used in the tastiest chowder imaginable or baked or sauteed, you get the full essence of the sweet flavor of this clam.
The "clam ranch" is closed down for six months out of the year awaiting springtime and a brand new harvest of clams!
