Washington Crab Producers, Inc. (WCP) was acquired by Pacific Seafood
Group on March 17, 1993. Prior to the acquisition WCP was owned and
operated as a cooperative.
WCP had the strength of a well respected brand label "SeaRock"
which was known (especially in the Seattle market) for its high and
consistent quality and year round availability of fresh Crabmeat.
In 1994 the core management team was fully in place and WCP, which had
historically operated as an autonomous entity, was fully integrated
with the rest of Pacific Seafood Group with respect to marketing and
management. WCP more fully utilized the strength of our distribution
group to increase market exposure and capacity.
By 1994 the company employed 170 people year round. Our strengths were
6 shrimp peelers, a large area for finished shrimp meat and crab meat,
live crab holding capacity (unique to the group) and ample dry packaging
storage.
In order to better service our fleet, we expanded in 1994 with the acquisition
of Pt. Adams equipment and leasehold improvements. Taking over the lease
of an additional dock helped to cement the groups commitment to Westport
and surrounding community.
.By 1995 Crab capacity was increased by 20%, through updating and efficiencies
of the plant facilities. In 1996 a "blanching system" for
cooking crab was installed, which increased the quality of our finished
product. This is opposed to the boiling process that is used by the
rest of the industry. Blanching improves shelf life of the Crabmeat
by reducing bacteria and enhancing the appearance of the snowy white
color of the body meat. This is a Pacific Group exclusive and one of
the many reasons for consumer loyalty to our brand.
The "SeaRock" brand is considered the standard of the industry
for fresh and frozen crab products. Fresh Crabmeat is processed daily
by the most experienced crab "shakers" in the industry. Team
pride drives excellence and consistency of products that the SeaRock
brand has been built on for decades.
